Sensory Overload

Sensory overload occurs when a person is exposed to more sensory input—like sights, sounds, and smells—than their brain can process at once. This overwhelming experience can lead to feelings of anxiety, stress, or discomfort. Common in busy environments, such as crowded places or loud settings, it can affect anyone, particularly individuals with sensory processing sensitivities, such as those with autism or ADHD. When overwhelmed, people might feel the need to escape the stimuli, as it becomes difficult to focus or think clearly. Managing sensory overload often involves finding quiet spaces and reducing exposure to intense stimuli.
