Secondary Hypoparathyroidism

Secondary hypoparathyroidism occurs when the parathyroid glands produce insufficient parathyroid hormone (PTH) due to another underlying condition, often chronic kidney disease. Normally, PTH regulates calcium levels in the blood by signaling bones, kidneys, and intestines. If the kidneys are damaged, they can't convert vitamin D into its active form, leading to lower calcium levels. As a result, the parathyroid glands can become less effective over time. This condition can cause symptoms such as muscle cramps, numbness, and increased anxiety due to imbalanced calcium levels in the body. Treatment focuses on managing the underlying cause and symptoms.
