Scholar-officials

Scholar-officials were educated civil servants in imperial China, particularly during the Tang and Song dynasties. They emerged from a system that emphasized rigorous examinations based on Confucian texts, which determined a person's qualifications to govern and administer. Often from wealthy families, these officials played crucial roles in the bureaucracy, shaping policies and governance.
