Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN)
The Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) is a leftist political party in Nicaragua, founded in the early 1960s. It aimed to overthrow the U.S.-backed Somoza dictatorship, which it achieved in 1979. The FSLN established a socialist government focused on land reform, literacy, and social welfare. However, it faced internal and external conflicts, particularly from the U.S.-supported Contra rebels. In the 1990 elections, the FSLN lost power but remained influential. The party returned to power in 2007 under leader Daniel Ortega, navigating a landscape of political challenges and economic issues while advocating for a mixed socialist and democratic approach.
