Salinity

Salinity refers to the amount of salt dissolved in water. It is typically measured in parts per thousand (ppt) or practical salinity units (PSU). In natural environments, oceans have high salinity, usually around 35 ppt, while freshwater lakes and rivers have low salinity. Salinity influences water density, readability for aquatic life, and how water interacts with its environment. Changes in salinity can result from evaporation, rainfall, or inflow of rivers. Understanding salinity is important for studying ocean currents, climate regulation, and the health of aquatic ecosystems.
