Sagittarius A*
Sagittarius A* (pronounced "Sagittarius A-star") is the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way. It has a mass about four million times that of our Sun and lies roughly 26,000 light-years from Earth. Although it's invisible to the naked eye, astronomers detect its presence through the intense gravitational pull it exerts on nearby stars and gas, causing them to orbit rapidly. This black hole is a key factor in understanding galaxy formation and dynamics. Despite its powerful gravity, it doesn't actively swallow matter all the time but can emit bright radio waves, making it observable with specialized telescopes.
