RNA polymerase is an enzyme that plays a essential role in gene expression by synthesizing RNA molecules from DNA templates. When a cell needs to produce a specific protein, RNA polymerase binds to a particular region of the DNA known as the promoter, unwinds the DNA strands, and then assembles a complementary strand of RNA using one of the DNA strands as a guide.
