Risorgimento

The Risorgimento was Italy's 19th-century movement to unify its various independent states and kingdoms into a single nation. Starting around 1815, it involved political activism, military efforts, and cultural nationalism aimed at consolidating territories like Sardinia, Sicily, and Lombardy. Key figures such as Giuseppe Garibaldi and Count Cavour led efforts to end foreign rule and regional divisions, culminating in the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. The movement laid the foundation for modern Italy, fostering a shared national identity and sovereignty after centuries of fragmented rule.
