relevance theory

Relevance Theory is a communication theory suggesting that people interpret information based on its relevance to their own interests and experiences. It posits that when we communicate, we automatically analyze how the information provided fits into what we already know. We seek the most meaningful and useful insights with the least cognitive effort. As a result, effective communication occurs when the speaker provides information that immediately resonates or sparks curiosity, allowing the listener to connect the message with their own knowledge and context. This enhances understanding and engagement in conversations.
