Gricean Maxims
Gricean Maxims are guidelines proposed by philosopher H.P. Grice to facilitate effective communication. They include: Quantity (share enough information but not too much), Quality (be truthful and avoid false or unsupported claims), Relation (relevance—stick to the topic), and Manner (be clear, concise, and orderly). Following these principles helps conversations be understandable, cooperative, and efficient. When speakers adhere to these maxims, communication flows smoothly; when they don't, misunderstandings or confusion can occur. They serve as a foundation for productive and truthful interactions in everyday conversation.
