Reconquista concept
The Reconquista refers to the historical process in which Christian kingdoms in the Iberian Peninsula sought to reclaim territory from Muslim rule, which had lasted for several centuries. Spanning from the 8th to the late 15th century, this effort culminated in 1492 when the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, captured Granada, the last Muslim stronghold. The Reconquista significantly shaped Spanish identity and culture, influencing politics, religion, and society in the region. It also set the stage for Spain’s later exploration and expansion during the Age of Discovery.
