Reading First
Reading First was a U.S. federal initiative launched in 2002 aimed at improving reading skills among young children, particularly in grades K-3. It focused on using evidence-based teaching methods and provided funding to schools to implement effective reading programs. The initiative emphasized the importance of phonics, comprehension, and fluency in reading instruction. By supporting teacher training and resources, Reading First aimed to ensure that all students could achieve reading proficiency by the end of third grade, recognizing that strong reading skills are crucial for overall academic success. The program faced criticism and was eventually discontinued in 2009.
