Pulmonary Fungal Infections

Pulmonary fungal infections occur when fungi invade the lungs, leading to breathing issues and other respiratory symptoms. Common types include histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis, and aspergillosis. These infections can develop from inhaling airborne spores found in soil or decaying organic matter. People with weakened immune systems, such as those with certain medical conditions or taking immunosuppressive medications, are at higher risk. Symptoms may resemble those of bacterial infections, including cough, fever, and chest pain. Diagnosis often involves imaging and lab tests, and treatment typically includes antifungal medications to eliminate the infection and reduce symptoms.
