Coccidioidomycosis
Coccidioidomycosis, commonly known as Valley fever, is a fungal infection caused by the Coccidioides fungus, which lives in the soil of certain regions, particularly the southwestern United States. When the soil is disturbed, tiny spores can become airborne and inhaled. Many people experience mild flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough, and fatigue, but some may develop more severe illness, especially those with weakened immune systems. The disease often resolves on its own, but treatment may be needed for more serious cases or persistent symptoms. Preventing exposure in endemic areas is key.
