Proprietary Estoppel

Proprietary estoppel is a legal principle that prevents a person from going back on a promise or representation about property rights that another person has relied on, to their detriment. For example, if someone has been led to believe they will inherit a piece of land and they take actions based on that belief, the person who made the promise may be required to honor it, even if no formal agreement exists. This principle protects individuals from unfair disadvantages caused by reliance on others' assurances regarding property ownership or rights.
