Polis
A polis, in general knowledge, refers to an ancient Greek city-state, which was a fundamental political unit in ancient Greece. Each polis consisted of a city and its surrounding countryside, functioning independently with its own government and laws. Notable examples include Athens and Sparta. The polis was central to Greek identity and culture, encouraging civic engagement and the development of democracy in Athens. It represented both the physical city and the community of citizens who lived there, emphasizing the importance of citizenship and active participation in public life.
