Photoionization

Photoionization is a process where an atom or molecule absorbs energy from light (photons) and loses one or more of its electrons. This occurs when the energy of the light is high enough to overcome the attractive force that holds the electrons in place. As a result, the atom becomes positively charged, known as an ion. This process is important in various fields, such as astrophysics, chemistry, and environmental science, as it plays a key role in the formation of ions in the atmosphere and in certain types of chemical reactions.
