Pharos of Alexandria
The Pharos of Alexandria was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, built on the island of Pharos near Alexandria, Egypt, around the 3rd century BCE. It was a towering lighthouse, estimated to be about 100 meters (330 feet) tall, guiding sailors safely into the busy harbor. Its design included a fire at the top that produced a bright light visible for miles, serving as a navigational aid. The Pharos symbolized Alexandria’s status as a major center of trade and innovation. It stood for centuries before falling into ruin due to earthquakes, and its remains influenced the development of medieval lighthouses.
