Patrick Manson

Patrick Manson was a Scottish physician, often regarded as the father of tropical medicine. Born in 1844, he contributed significantly to understanding how diseases are transmitted, particularly the role of insects as vectors. Manson discovered that the mosquito Anopheles spreads malaria and that certain parasites complete their life cycle in mosquitoes. His work laid the foundation for public health interventions and the eventual eradication efforts against various tropical diseases. Manson’s pioneering research and insights have had a lasting impact on the fields of medicine, entomology, and global health, influencing how we understand and combat infectious diseases today.
