Passchendaele
Passchendaele, also known as the Third Battle of Ypres, was a significant World War I battle fought from July to November 1917 in Belgium. The Allies aimed to break through German defenses and capture vital points. Soldiers faced harsh conditions, including heavy rain that turned the battlefield into a quagmire of mud. The offensive resulted in heavy casualties—over 500,000 combined for both sides—and limited territorial gains. The battle is often remembered for its tragic human cost and the suffering endured by the soldiers, symbolizing the horrors of trench warfare and the futility of the war.
