Ypres Salient
The Ypres Salient was a heavily contested area during World War I, located around the Belgian town of Ypres. It was a protruding front line bulge into enemy territory, making it difficult to defend and easy for attacking forces to target. The region saw intense battles characterized by trench warfare and the use of new weaponry, including poison gas. Control of the Salient changed hands multiple times, and its harsh conditions symbolized the brutal and static nature of trench warfare, resulting in significant casualties and destruction over several years.
