Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) are chemicals that harm the ozone layer, a protective shield in Earth's atmosphere that absorbs harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. When ODS, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) found in old refrigerators and aerosol sprays, are released, they rise into the atmosphere and break down ozone molecules. This depletion leads to increased UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface, contributing to skin cancer, cataracts, and environmental harm. International agreements like the Montreal Protocol aim to phase out the use of ODS to protect the ozone layer and promote a healthier planet.
