Otoliths

Otoliths are tiny structures found in the inner ear of fish and some other animals. They are made of calcium carbonate and serve as important organs for balance and hearing. When a fish moves, the otoliths shift in response to gravity and movement, helping the fish maintain its orientation in the water. The brain interprets these movements, allowing the fish to navigate effectively. Otoliths can also provide valuable information about the fish’s age and growth, as they develop layers over time, similar to tree rings. This makes them useful in studying fish populations and ecosystems.
