Nigerian independence
Nigerian independence refers to the country's transition from British colonial rule to self-governance, which officially occurred on October 1, 1960. After decades of growing nationalist movements and demands for autonomy, Nigeria gained independence through peaceful negotiations and constitutional reforms. Leaders like Nnamdi Azikiwe and Obafemi Awolowo played crucial roles in advocating for independence. The process aimed to unite the diverse ethnic groups within Nigeria and promote self-determination. However, the journey post-independence was marked by political challenges, leading to instability and civil strife, including the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970.
