New Zealand history
New Zealand's history began with Māori settlement over 1,000 years ago, bringing a rich culture and traditions. In the 18th century, European explorers, including Captain James Cook, arrived, leading to increased contact and eventual colonization. By the mid-19th century, New Zealand became a British colony, leading to land disputes and conflicts with Māori. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840, aimed at establishing rights and governance. Over time, New Zealand developed its identity as a nation, achieving dominion status in 1907 and full independence by the mid-20th century, becoming known for its progressive social policies and cultural diversity.
