Neuraminidase

Neuraminidase is an enzyme found on the surface of certain viruses, particularly the influenza virus. It plays a crucial role in the virus's ability to spread within the body. When the virus infects a cell, neuraminidase helps release new viral particles by breaking down sialic acid, a sugar molecule on the surface of host cells. This process allows the virus to escape and infect other cells. Because of its importance in viral infection, neuraminidase is a target for antiviral medications, such as Tamiflu, which inhibit the enzyme's function and help control influenza outbreaks.
