National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA)

The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), now known as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), is an Indian legislation enacted in 2005. It aims to provide at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. The act seeks to enhance livelihood security, reduce rural poverty, and empower communities by ensuring access to work and promoting sustainable development in rural areas. It also mandates timely payment of wages and ensures transparency through social audits.
