National Popular Vote Interstate Compact
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) is an agreement among some U.S. states to ensure that the presidential candidate who receives the most votes nationwide wins the election. States that join the compact pledge to award all their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the overall popular vote, regardless of the state’s outcome. The compact only takes effect when enough states (205 electoral votes) join to reach a majority in the Electoral College. This aims to make every vote count equally, addressing concerns that the current system can lead to candidates focusing only on swing states.
