Mohammad Daoud Khan was an Afghan military officer and politician who served as the Prime Minister of Afghanistan from 1953 to 1963 and later as its first President from 1973 until his overthrow in 1978. He is known for modernizing Afghanistan, promoting economic development, and striving for greater independence from foreign influence, particularly from both the Soviet Union and the West. His tenure was marked by significant reforms, but also political strife. Daoud's rule ended when he was deposed by a communist coup, which led to years of conflict in Afghanistan.
