metabolic equivalents (METs)

Metabolic equivalents, or METs, are a way to measure the energy cost of physical activities. One MET is equivalent to the energy your body uses at rest, such as sitting quietly. When you engage in activities, the MET value increases, reflecting the intensity of the effort. For example, walking briskly may be around 3-4 METs, meaning it uses three to four times more energy than resting. This measurement helps individuals understand how different exercises impact their energy expenditure and can assist in creating effective fitness routines based on personal goals and health conditions.
