Melakarta

Melakarta is a system of 72 fundamental musical scales used in Carnatic music, the classical tradition of South India. Each Melakarta scale consists of a specific arrangement of seven notes, or swaras, which form the basis for various raagas (melodies). These scales provide a structure for composition and improvisation, allowing musicians to explore different emotional expressions. The Melakarta system helps categorize and organize raagas, ensuring a systematic approach to understanding and performing music in this rich cultural tradition.
