Mayan Script

Mayan script is an ancient writing system used by the Maya civilization in Mesoamerica, around 250 to 900 AD. It consists of a combination of logograms—symbols representing words or concepts—and syllabic signs that represent sounds. The script was primarily inscribed on stone monuments, pottery, and codices. Scholars have deciphered much of it, revealing insights into Mayan history, culture, religion, and astronomy. The complexity of the script reflects the sophistication of Maya society, with written records serving important roles in communication, governance, and rituals.
