Locomotive Act 1865
The Locomotive Act of 1865 was a British law aimed at regulating the use of motor vehicles on public roads. It required steam-powered vehicles, known as locomotives, to be equipped with certain safety features and imposed speed limits of 4 mph in open areas and 2 mph in towns. Additionally, vehicles had to display a red flag and be preceded by a man walking in front to warn others. This act was designed to address safety concerns but ultimately hindered the growth of motor vehicle use in Britain for years, earning the nickname "the Red Flag Act."
