Laryngectomy

Laryngectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the larynx, commonly referred to as the voice box, usually due to cancer or severe damage. This operation results in the loss of natural voice, as the larynx is essential for speaking. After the surgery, patients breathe through a stoma, an opening created in the neck. They may use special devices or learn new methods to communicate. Rehabilitation often includes speech therapy to help adapt to life without a voice box, emphasizing that while the physical voice is lost, effective communication can still be achieved through alternative means.
