Katharevousa
Katharevousa is a form of the Greek language that emerged in the 19th century, designed to be a more formal and purist version of modern Greek. It sought to revive elements of ancient Greek while also incorporating modern vocabulary. Katharevousa was used in official documents, education, and literature, reflecting a desire for a connection to Greece's ancient heritage amid the changes of the modern era. However, it was often seen as difficult to understand by the general population. By the late 20th century, it was largely replaced by Demotic Greek, which is the conversational and widely used form today.
