Demotic Greek

Demotic Greek is the modern form of the Greek language that evolved from Medieval Greek and is the spoken language of Greece today. It emerged in the late 19th century as a response to the complexities of the older, more formal language known as Katharevousa. Demotic is characterized by its simplified grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, making it more accessible to the general population. In 1976, it was officially adopted as the standard form of Greek, reflecting the everyday speech of Greeks while preserving the rich cultural heritage of the language.
