Kansas Territory

The Kansas Territory was an area established by the U.S. government in 1854, intended for settlement and development. It played a significant role in the conflict over the expansion of slavery in the United States, leading to violent clashes known as "Bleeding Kansas." This struggle arose from the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which allowed residents to decide whether to permit slavery. The territory ultimately became the state of Kansas in 1861, and its turbulent history highlighted the deep divisions in the country that would eventually lead to the Civil War.
