Isthmus of Tehuantepec
The Isthmus of Tehuantepec is a narrow strip of land in Mexico that connects the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. It is about 200 kilometers (124 miles) wide at its narrowest point. This isthmus is significant because it serves as a strategic transportation route, allowing goods to be moved between the two oceans without the long journey around South America. Historically, there have been proposals to construct a canal here, similar to the Panama Canal, to enhance trade and navigation. Its varied landscapes include mountains, forests, and unique cultural regions.
