Isidor Straus

Isidor Straus was a prominent American businessman and politician in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, best known as a co-owner of the department store Macy's. Born in 1845 in Germany, he immigrated to the U.S. and built a successful retail empire. Alongside his wife, he was also known for his philanthropic efforts. Tragically, he died in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, famously choosing to stay behind and help others, including his wife, who survived. Straus's legacy includes his contributions to retail and his commitment to humanitarian causes.
