Indigo Revolt

The Indigo Revolt, also known as the Indigo Rebellion, occurred in 1859 in Bengal, India. It was a peasant uprising against British planters who exploited local farmers, forcing them to grow indigo instead of food crops. Farmers faced harsh conditions and unfair contracts, leading to widespread poverty. Organized by leaders like Kumudini Mohanta and later supported by intellectuals, the revolt aimed to reclaim rights and fair treatment. Although it was suppressed, the Indigo Revolt highlighted the injustices of colonial rule and inspired future movements for independence and social reform in India.
