Identificational Assimilation

Identificational assimilation refers to the process by which individuals or groups adopt the identity of the dominant culture, embracing its values, beliefs, and practices as their own. This goes beyond simply adopting behaviors or customs; it involves aligning one’s self-concept and sense of belonging with the dominant culture. Essentially, it’s when a minority group comes to see itself as part of the larger society, often leading to a blending of cultural identities and a reduction of differences in social interactions and group affiliations. This kind of assimilation can help foster social cohesion but may also lead to the loss of distinct cultural identities.
