HMAS Sydney (I)

HMAS Sydney (I) was an Australian light cruiser commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in 1913. It played a significant role during World War I, notably in the Mediterranean and the Battle of the Cocos Islands, where it sank a German cruiser. The ship was well-regarded for its speed and agility. Tragically, HMAS Sydney (I) was sunk by a German submarine, U-boat, in 1914 off the coast of West Australia. The loss of the ship, along with its crew, marked a significant moment in Australian naval history and raised awareness about the dangers of naval warfare.
