Guardian Council

The Guardian Council is an important body in Iran responsible for overseeing elections and ensuring that laws comply with Islamic principles and the constitution. It consists of 12 members: six clerics appointed by the Supreme Leader and six jurists selected by the parliament. The council has the power to vet candidates for political office, rejecting those deemed unqualified or unsuitable. Additionally, it reviews legislation passed by the parliament, ensuring alignment with Islamic law. This role significantly influences Iran’s political landscape, shaping who can participate in governance and what laws can be enacted.
