Gilbert Ryle

Gilbert Ryle was a British philosopher known for his critique of the dualist view that mind and body are separate. He famously referred to this view as the "ghost in the machine." Ryle argued that mental processes should be understood as behaviors and actions, rather than as hidden inner experiences. He emphasized the importance of ordinary language in philosophy, advocating that many philosophical problems arise from misunderstandings of language. Ryle's work contributed to discussions on the nature of knowledge, the relationship between universal concepts and particular instances, and how we conceptualize mental states and behaviors.
