G6PD deficiency

G6PD deficiency is a genetic condition in which the body lacks enough of an enzyme called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD). This enzyme helps protect red blood cells from damage caused by certain stresses, such as infections or specific medications. Without enough G6PD, these cells can break down prematurely, leading to anemia—a condition where you don’t have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen. Most people with this deficiency live normal lives but should avoid certain triggers to prevent hemolytic episodes, which involve the sudden breakdown of red blood cells.
