Freon

Freon is a brand name for a group of chemicals known as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which are used primarily as refrigerants in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. They work by absorbing heat and circulating it to create a cooling effect. However, Freon contributes to ozone depletion in the atmosphere, leading to environmental concerns. Due to these issues, the use of many Freon types has been phased out or restricted under international agreements like the Montreal Protocol, leading to the development of more eco-friendly refrigerants.
