Foil

In literature, a foil is a character who contrasts with another, usually the protagonist, to highlight certain qualities or traits. By presenting a character with differing characteristics—such as bravery vs. cowardice or arrogance vs. humility—the foil helps to emphasize the main character’s personality, motives, or development. This contrast allows readers to better understand the central character and the themes of the story. Foils are a useful storytelling device for creating depth, tension, and clarity about key qualities within the narrative.
