Fiber-optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
Fiber-optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is a medical procedure used to assess how well a person swallows. During the test, a thin, flexible tube with a camera (fiber-optic endoscope) is inserted through the nose into the throat. This allows doctors to directly observe the swallowing process, identify any difficulties, and check for potential risks of aspiration (food or liquid entering the airway). FEES is especially useful for diagnosing swallowing disorders in individuals with conditions like strokes or neurological diseases, helping to guide appropriate treatment and dietary recommendations.
