Functional endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
Functional Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a medical procedure used to assess how well a person can swallow. A healthcare professional inserts a thin, flexible camera through the nose to directly observe the throat and larynx as the person drinks or eats. This allows them to see if food or liquid safely passes without going into the airway, or if there are problems like choking or residue. FEES helps diagnose swallowing disorders and guides appropriate treatment to improve safety and nutrition, all while the person is seated normally and without the need for X-ray imaging.
