Hyoid bone

The hyoid bone is a unique, U-shaped bone located in the neck, above the larynx (voice box) and below the jaw. It doesn't connect directly to any other bones but is anchored by muscles and ligaments. Its primary functions include supporting the tongue, aiding in speech and swallowing, and maintaining the airway. The hyoid bone's stability and positioning make it essential for coordinated movements involved in talking, eating, and breathing. Because of its prominence and protected location, it is also often involved in trauma assessments.
